Even the screws from big box stores can face the same issue, as white screws can only be painted instead of being electroplated, owing to the manufacturing process. Before tightening the screws, ensure they fit well and handle them with care to prevent damaging the paint. You may use a piece of tape, a soft cloth, or even tissue paper to cover the tip of the screwdriver, and then gently tighten the screws. For toggle switch and duplex outlet cover wall plates, we use 3/4-inch-long screws. For rocker switch/GFCI receptacle wall plates, we use 3/8-inch-long screws.
